The Responsible Care® Hydrogen Hackathon

October 7, 2024, CIAC’s Vice-President of Responsible Care, Kara Edwards attended the Responsible Care Hydrogen Hackathon at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Toronto. She was joined by Ron Koniuch (CCC Sulphur Products and CIAC Board member), Emily Fattore (ERCO Worldwide executive and CIAC Board member), John Christie (former executive at ERCO Worldwide, retired), and Kris Lee (CIAC Responsible Care public verifier).

At the hackathon, 28 students from universities across the country worked in groups to examine a real-world challenge of working in the chemical industry. Each scenario involved the Responsible Care ethic: “do the right thing and be seen to do the right thing.” Students then applied a Responsible Care lens on their proposed solution. The first-prize team won $200 each and a certificate, second place winners won $100 each and a certificate.
