Codes, Standards, Regulations (CSR) and Insurance Gap Analysis for Hydrogen value chain development in Alberta

Panellists Dr. Lianne M. Lefsrud, Dr. Fereshteh Sattari and Anirudha Joshi of the University of Alberta joined CIAC for a webinar on April 16 to share their research on the topic of Codes, Standards, Regulations (CSR) and Insurance Gap Analysis for Hydrogen value chain development in Alberta.

The integration of hydrogen into Canada’s energy system is crucial for reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and achieving the net-zero emission target by 2050. The National Research Council of Canada (NRCan, 2022) has recently published a preliminary study around hydrogen for Canadian companies along the value chain, to determine gaps, and make recommendations to address these. The highest priority gaps across all elements of the value chain were addressing process safety. CSA’s Safety Codes Council also identified gaps but does not have a method of prioritizing these. By using quantitative risk assessment (QRA), their analysis of specific use-case scenarios will determine where gaps exist in Alberta, compare its codes and standards vs. other jurisdictions (e.g., California, Japan) and enshrine a safety-first approach.
