Regulatory Partners

Informed Consumers

Canada sets the bar high for the meaningful and accurate labelling information currently provided to consumers and workers. Under Responsible Care, CIAC supports the consumer’s right to know about the substances that are present in the products they use so they can make informed purchasing decisions.

We believe in providing vital and honest information about the products consumers purchase while maintaining protections on confidential business information. Our current legislative and regulatory systems provide that and are often supplemented by voluntary industry initiatives.

Alternative Assessments

Where a CEPA toxic designation is justified, CIAC supports the proposition that an alternative be considered as an element of risk management, if it is possible to do so. Similar programs around the world – like the EPA’s Safer Choice Program – require an identified risk before the initiative can be triggered. However, there should be no drive to alternatives until a definite decision has been made under Schedule 1. It remains our view that an available alternative should not influence a risk assessment.
