CIAC urges support for Private Members’ Bill C-380, Bill An Act to Amend the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (plastic manufactured items)

The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), which represents the country’s chemistry and plastics sector, is urging Members of Parliament to support MP Corey Tochor’s (Saskatoon—University) Bill C-380 which removes Plastic Manufactured Items as toxic substances under the then Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, (CEPA) 1999.

CIAC has been steadfast in its objections to the Government of Canada’s decision April 23, 2021, which declared all plastic manufactured items as toxic substances under the then Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, (CEPA) 1999.

CIAC strongly believes in taking effective and necessary actions to reduce plastic waste while embracing the many benefits of plastics which are crucial for a modern, sustainable economy.

“Plastics are not toxic and have no place listed on Schedule 1 with actual toxic substances. From protecting and prolonging the life of perishable foods, to being essential for electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels, to medical equipment, plastics are essential to a safe, modern, and sustainable way of life for Canadians,” said Christa Seaman, CIAC Vice-President, Plastic Division.

CIAC remains committed to working with governments and all stakeholders to find the right solutions to significantly reduce post-consumer plastic waste and keep plastics out of the natural environment, while making the most of a valuable resource that helps the economy thrive.

At the heart of CIAC is its members’ commitment to  Responsible Care®, a made-in-Canada, UN-recognized initiative that ensures CIAC members innovate for safer and more sustainable products and processes. Responsible Care is practiced in 73 countries and by 96 of the 100 largest chemical producers in the world.

CIAC Plastics Division (PD) members recognize their responsibility to reduce plastic pollution right from the very start of the plastics value chain. PD members adhere to the principles of Operation Clean SweepTM (OCS), an international, prevention-focused program for environmental stewardship designed to help every plastic resin manufacturing and handling operation implement good housekeeping and resin containment practices.
