CIAC SUPPORTIVE OF NEW FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STANDARDS FOR GHG EMISSIONS REDUCTION

The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) is pleased Environment Canada has announced its intention to move forward with regulations to reduce GHG emissions from the production of chemicals.

“These proposed standards will help give our members a measure of regulatory certainty and provide a good benchmark for provincial GHG regulations,” says Richard Paton, President and CEO of CIAC. “This in turn, helps our members plan new investments and continuous improvements to plant facilities in Canada.”

CIAC has been working with Environment Canada for more than five years to develop this set of comprehensive performance-based standards for chemistry sector GHG emissions. The approach was collaborative and focused on how the chemistry industry in Canada can continue to reduce emissions, remain competitive and contribute to economic growth.

Since 1992, CIAC members under Responsible Care® – the association’s U.N.-recognized sustainability initiative – have cut their carbon dioxide emissions by 35 per cent and reduced the global warming potential of their operations by 69 per cent. CIAC members continue to work hard to reduce GHGs through operational efficiencies and product innovation.

“The commitment made by the Minister today is a good step forward in helping us continue our work and make even more progress in addressing climate change issues in Canada,” says Paton.

CIAC believes the most effective kind of regulatory regime is one that works across all jurisdictions.

“We look forward to working in partnership with provincial governments to create effective regulations that work for the chemistry industry throughout Canada.”
