On December 12, the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) released its Industrial Chemical Industry: Performance Snapshot – Third Quarter of 2017 report. Overall, industrial chemicals experienced stronger performance than for the same period in 2016, but growth was weaker compared to the first half of 2017.
- Industrial chemical shipments increased by 6 per cent over the first three quarters of 2017, driven by strong growth in petrochemicals, organic chemicals and inorganic chemicals. Only synthetic resins showed a decline in shipments;
- Rail car shipments increased by 2 per cent between the first half and third quarter;
- Exports for industrial chemicals after three quarters were similar to 2016 exports. Growth in petrochemicals surged compared to the same period in 2016; other organic chemicals increased, while inorganic chemicals and synthetic resin exports decreased; and
- Industrial chemical GDP dropped 6 per cent in the third quarter.
